The Kingsman Prize was established in memory of the long-standing scholar of Management Science, Professor Brian Kingsman. The 2023 prize has been jointly awarded to Management Science PhD graduates Thu Dang and Kandrika Pritularga.

Thu’s supervisor, Adam Letchford, has written the following citation:

Thu’s PhD project was concerned with helping local councils plan vehicle routes for the kerbside collection of household waste and recyclable materials. The project was funded partly by the EPSRC (via STOR-i) and partly by a consultancy company called Routeware. Right from the start of her PhD, Thu proved to be a gifted mathematician, communicator and computer programmer. Remarkably, she already had four articles accepted by the date of her viva (three in Networks and one in Computers & Operations Research). Moreover, the examiners expressed no hesitation in awarding the PhD immediately, with no corrections at all. On a more personal note, we found Thu a pleasure to supervise and we are very pleased that she is now a lecturer in the Department.

Kandrika’s supervisor, Ivan Svetunkov, has written the following citation:

Kandrika Pritularga's research focused on looking at uncertainty arising from estimation of dynamic models (such as exponential smoothing) in real life, and how this uncertainty impacts forecast accuracy and decisions related to it. His thesis was presented as a series of three papers, two of which were accepted for publication in internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals (both AJG3). He also acted as a co-author of the "legion" package in R, which has been downloaded approximately 500 times per month. Finally, in addition to his main responsibilities of a PhD student, Kandrika helped the Centre for Marketing Analytics and Forecasting in maintaining the social media presence and in organising webinars, attracting many academic and practitioner participants (on average 50).
