Prospective Students

Thinking about coming to Lancaster? Find out what it's like to be a member of Bowland College.

Welcome Week

Welcome Week takes place in the week before the start of term. It is a period of time before lectures officially start where you can orientate yourself on campus, settle into your accommodation, find your way around campus and get settled before term starts. During the week there are a range of compulsory and optional events, both academic and social to help you build friendships and networks both in your college and in your academic department.

You can find out what is planned via the University’s Welcome Week website which will be available to view once events are finalised. You can also browse the Welcome Week schedule via the iLancaster app.

Accommodation

Our accommodation is varied, suiting a range of preferences and budgets; this ensures our College community is made up of a rich and diverse student population.

Catered options are available in certain accommodation blocks. As the College is centrally placed on campus, some of our residences are close to the main eateries and retail outlets on campus.

College facilities

At the heart of Bowland is our student common room. This is a combined study and social space, used for events and activities throughout the year and includes recreational items such as a pool table, dart boards, table tennis and boxed games. Many students use the space to study, eat lunch or to catch up with friends.

College life

We have several sports teams that compete in College leagues over the first and second terms. College sports include Football, Netball, Pool, Darts, Table Tennis and Dominoes, with try-outs taking place in the first few weeks of term. A wide range of competitive and recreational sports are on offer, so everyone can take part regardless of skill level, and it's a great way to meet new people.

A range of inclusive social events are planned throughout the year, both on and off campus. Annual highlights include the Winter Ball and summer Extravaganza, as well as regular quiz nights, day trips and food events.

Inter-college competitions

As a Lancaster student, you can take part in many different inter-college competitions and represent your college team. These include the Sustainability Challenge, the annual Debating Competition and the hotly-contested Inter-College Quiz. For the academic year 2020/21, we also introduced a Baking Competition, Crafting Competition and a Talent Competition, so whatever you are interested in, there is something for everyone.
