Student Journals
The Department currently houses four student-run journals: Cake, Flash, Errant, and Lux. Each journal has academic input and allows students to publish their work to a wider audience. These journals also allow participating students to gain knowledge and experience in print and online publishing. Students can contribute in a range of ways, from writing, editing and illustration to publication, sales and marketing.
Cake
Cake was founded in 2009 by the prize-winning poet Andrew McMillan and the poetry editor Martha Sprackland, who were both students in the department at the time.
Run entirely by a student team, it publishes poetry, short fiction, commentaries, essays, reviews and artwork from both new and established writers from within the university and beyond.
It publishes the annual winners of our own Lancaster Writing Awards, partners with the department’s annual Lancaster Words Festival, and includes regular how-to ‘methods’ articles by experienced writers.
It is distributed in print across the university and elsewhere.

Flash
Flash is a termly online journal managed entirely by undergraduates that publishes fiction and poetry, plus critical and hybrid work by current Lancaster undergraduates. The Flash team also host lively termly launch events where featured writers read their work to a friendly audience. New writers from the department are encouraged to submit and are guided through the editorial process by experienced editors. Every piece of submitted work receives personalised feedback.

Errant
Errant is a post-critical, or critical-creative, journal run by MA and PhD students. Submissions are open to students of any level, and the journal editors encourage work that pushes the boundaries of critical and creative modes. If you think your work is too elusive to be defined, whether you are a student of literature or creative writing, then it will most likely fit in with Errant!
LUX
LUX is an undergraduate journal that seeks to exhibit the very best of student academic excellence from across Lancaster University’s arts and humanities departments.
While founded in the Department of English Literature and Creative Writing, the journal is interdisciplinary and values contributions from Lancaster students across all departments.
The journal welcomes works from students that offers incisive, original, rigorous and scholarly comment on all areas of literature and culture. The journal celebrates the exemplary work of its undergraduate editors and contributors and provides a platform for presenting relevant, exciting research that is helpful and interesting to students and staff both now and in the future.
