About us

Established in 1964, the History Department has a reputation for exemplary teaching and outstanding research.

Welcome to the Department of History at Lancaster. The members of staff in the Department produce historical research of the highest international quality. Students who come to Lancaster can therefore expect to be taught by scholars who use their knowledge and expertise to offer innovative research-led teaching. The Department is a friendly place where students have ample opportunity to discuss their work with staff both in class and individual tutorials.

The Undergraduate Experience

Our undergraduate degree programme provides a rigorous academic education, as well as equipping students with transferrable skills that will help them stand out in an increasingly competitive job market. We allow students a great deal of choice when deciding what to study. The undergraduate degree programme also helps students to develop the research skills which they need when studying their final year Special Subject and writing their dissertation.

Postgraduate Study at Lancaster

Lancaster has offered Master's and Doctorates in History since the Department’s inception, and graduate students have always formed a vital part of the departmental intellectual community. The highly successful annual Histfest postgraduate conference, which is wholly run by PhD students, is now in its 20th year. Our postgraduates also run their own fortnightly seminar, and fully participate in departmental research events.

The Research Environment

A wide variety of internationally recognised research activity takes place within the Department. Research by Lancaster historians extends in time from the ancient world to the modern period, and in space from Britain to North America and Europe to south Asia. Our research embraces socio-economic, environmental, cultural, political, religious and intellectual history. We also have a great deal of expertise in the Digital Humanities.

Do please get in touch with the Department for any further information. And if you are interested in studying with us do please attend one of our Open Days, where you will have a chance to meet both staff and current students.
