Study for a PhD in History
Postgraduate students are a vital part of our departmental intellectual community. 54 PhDs have graduated since 2000, while our MA enrolment has averaged around 30 students per year. The highly successful annual Histfest postgraduate conference, which is wholly run by PhD students, is now in its 21st year. Our postgraduates also run their own fortnightly seminar, and fully participate in departmental research symposia.
You can tailor our Masters to suit your particular research interests. The MA is divided into four Pathways: Medieval and Early Modern, Modern, Heritage and Digital. Each of the pathways consists of four taught modules and a 20,000 word dissertation.
We run a Research and Professional Skills course for PhD students, covering topics ranging from publishing an article to scoping archives. We have been able to provide significant financial support for research and conference-related postgraduate travel.
We offer a number of studentships and fee-waivers at MA and PhD level from a range of internal sources. We have been very successful in obtaining support for History PhD students in University and Faculty competitions. We employ our PhD students wherever possible as Graduate Teaching Assistants, providing invaluable professional experience as well as additional income.
The Department has close links with a many heritage institutions in the North West. We offer a good number graduate placements with them every year, some of which have bursaries attached to them. All placements are designed in consultation with the client, and they focus on the acquisition of skills designed to improve students' employability.
