Comparative Literature and the Arts

teaching Italian seminar

Researchers in the Department of Languages and Cultures explore literature and the arts within their social, geopolitical and linguistic contexts. We are interested in how artistic and writing practices critically engage with and shape regional, national and colonial histories and geographies. Beyond the university sector, our research links cultural actors, creative writers and artists both locally and internationally through community engagements such as the Lancaster International Fiction lecture, which Languages and Cultures co-organises in partnership with Litfest. In addition to exploring the relationship between different cultural and linguistic communities, our research examines the transformative impact of the arts on politics, the environment, health and culture more widely.
