This research topic posits a simple question: How can languages be taught so that they challenge rather than reinforce social inequalities? Covering multiple languages in global contexts, we engage with this question from a wide range of perspectives and settings, i including interculturality, decolonization, multilingualism, mobilities, linguistic diversity, stereotypes, discrimination, wellbeing, textbook discourses and teacher education. Our work covers a wide range of theories and viewpoints, such as critical discourse analysis, activist pedagogy, culturally sustaining pedagogy, linguistic justice, translanguaging and LGBTQ perspectives. We seek to provide insights and methods for language educators across different educational levels to adapt and use in their own teaching.
