We examine important topics for society and for good accounting and finance practice. We undertake research in a variety of areas, such as bank accounting and regulation, financial accounting, corporate governance, corporate finance, asset pricing and financial econometrics. Our work covers considerations of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) investments and reporting, qualitative accounting and sustainability, and studies of trustworthiness and accountability of decision-making for bio-diversity. Colleagues undertake research spanning equality and diversity issues, such as gender, modern slavery, boardroom representation and paid leave.

We have a long history of research in areas of economic importance for improving society. Our microeconomics group have these main areas of activity: development economics and the economics of conflict; education, labour, health, and environmental economics; game theory; and behavioural and experimental economics. Within our macroeconomics group, we focus on business cycles, monetary and fiscal policy, and financial stability; economic inequality; and sustainability and climate change.

We lead responsibility-focused work within LUMS research centres (the Centre for Family Business; the Academy for Gender, Work and Leadership; the Gender Matters project). Responsibility is at the heart of our work, and we focus on sustainability, gender and entrepreneurship, and responsible leadership. Many of our faculty are members of the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business. We are proud hosts of Lancaster’s leading Entrepreneurs-in-Residence network, involving regional and global business leaders in developing and delivering high-quality higher education programmes.

We work in several areas of responsibility research, with an established and ever-developing interest in sustainable supply chains and optimisation of decision-making for reducing economic and environmental waste. Specific research areas include supply chain security, health systems research, humanitarian logistics, trust and fairness in operations strategies, forecasting and inventory management decisions to reduce economic and environmental waste, and circular innovation.

The wider shift in our field away from traditional marketing and consumer research towards responsibility-focused research has not gone unnoticed. In keeping with the vision of UN Sustainable Development Goal 16, which aims at ‘promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development’, many of our researchers have embraced a three-pronged strategy focused on the overlapping ideas of community, the environment, and the marketplace. Specific research areas include sustainability, social justice, health and health inequality.

Responsibility is treated from multiple perspectives in OWT, as a department dedicated to interdisciplinary social studies of management and its place in the world. Responsibility is analysed at individual, organisational, societal, and global levels in teaching, research and engagement. We teach courses on business ethics, work ethics, sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and the ethics and social dynamics of digital technologies. OWT has a rich history of engagement with responsibility in multidisciplinary and multidimensional perspectives.
