Working Environment

Our aim is to creative a positive and supportive working environment at STOR-i. This includes a personal working space and communal facilities shared with the STOR-i team for their sole use. STOR-i rooms are located together in the fully accessible ground floor of the Science and Technology building.

MRes base room

MRes students are located in the MRes base room and they take ownership of this area. The base room contains an individual desk space for each STOR-i MRes student.

You will be provided with a laptop for the duration of the programme. The base room is also equipped with computer screens, keyboards and mice for all students and a communal black and white printer.

PhD Office

All students in years 2-4 are based together in a spacious PhD office with a specific desk for each person over the duration of their studies.

STOR-i Boardroom and Consultancy Room

The STOR-i Boardroom is equipped with a central tables and chairs. This can be booked for small group meetings and discussions, as well as conferencing facilities.

The Consultancy room features a small round table and chairs which can be booked for smaller meetings and discussions.

STOR-i Hub

The STOR-i Hub, is equipped with comfortable chairs and tables. It can be booked for group meetings and discussions, and projection facilities are available for practising giving talks and supporting group discussions. This space is used as a social space for STOR-i staff and students, and contains kitchen facilities.

Video Conferencing

STOR-i has invested significantly in video conferencing and lecture capture equipment to enable an efficient means of communication with external partners and to enhance the learning experience of students. STOR-i has a mobile video conference unit that allows video calls with a number of different technologies including Skype, Google Hangouts and Cisco WebEx. The system also incorporates a Clickshare wireless presentation system, allowing up to 4 users to share their screens on the display simultaneously. Our lecture capture facility allows guest speakers to participate remotely using Skype. Slides and video can be recorded together, which can be streamed live on the internet or viewed later.

Other Facilities

The STOR-i programme is jointly administered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Management Science. Throughout the STOR-i programme you will use facilities in both departments.

Department of Mathematics and Statistics

There are two buildings in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, both containing important facilities and resources for your time at STOR-i. Most members of staff, PhD students not participating in the STOR-i programme and departmental administrative staff are based in the main building of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

The Postgraduate Statistics Centre (PSC) adjoins the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and houses further staff from the department. The PSC provides flexible working rooms and breakout areas aimed at enriching learning and teaching including a 50 seat lecture theatre, large computer rooms, small group tutorial teaching rooms and two small meeting rooms. There are open plan learning spaces and a dedicated video-conferencing space. The PSC additionally has social and relax spaces and showers for the use of staff and students. These are particularly useful for people who cycle or run into the university.

Department of Management Science

The Department of Management Science, based in the Management School, offers a number of facilities for postgraduate students. These resources include the Skein room based in the Management Science Department with comfortable sofas available for postgraduate students and staff. Two computer labs for use of students and a number of meeting rooms that can be used by postgraduate students who book in advance. A video-conferencing room that can broadcast to other universities is additionally available.
