Access Statement

The Ruskin, located on Lancaster University's campus, benefits from easily accessible transport options and a number of features within the building to enable a wide audience to engage with our work.

Getting Here

By Road

Lancaster University is located to the South of the City of Lancaster, off the A6. The University can be accessed via Junction 33 of the M6. There are a number of car parks throughout the site. The main car parks are located on Bowland Avenue and South West Drive.

By Bus

Local buses stop at the Southern Perimeter bus stop on South Drive, the Furness College bus stop on South East Drive, and Lancaster University Bus Station in the centre of the campus.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Lancaster, approximately 3.9 miles from the University. Buses are available from the station to the University.

Parking

Drop off Point

There is a designated drop-off point with tactile paving and a dropped kerb. The drop-off point is located outside University House.

Car Park

The nearest car park for visitors is located on Bowland Avenue, next to University House. The car park type is open-air with a tarmac surface. The car park does not have a height restriction barrier. There are 10 designated Blue Badge parking bays available which are clearly marked and signposted. The dimensions of the designated parking bays are 354cm x 600cm (11ft 7in x 19ft 8in). There are also 4 Blue Badge parking bays in Library Avenue to the south of The Ruskin.

Charges and Restrictions

This car park can be used by visitors, Blue Badge holders and staff permit holders. Parking charges apply for all except Blue Badge holders. Signs are provided to give information on parking charges/restrictions. Payment machines are located to the right of the Chaplaincy Building. There is a payment machine at a convenient height for wheelchair users.

Outside Access - Main Entrance

Entrance

There is ramped or stepped access at this entrance. There is a bell at a height of 78cm (2ft 7in), and a push pad which activates the automatic doors at a height of 80cm (2ft 8in). The main door opens towards you. The width of the door opening is 89cm (2ft 11in). There is a second set of doors which also open towards you. The width of the door opening is 89cm (2ft 11in).

Ramp

There is a permanent ramp at this entrance which is located on the approach to the main entrance and bypasses the steps. The ramp gradient is steep. There is a level landing at the top of the ramp.

Steps

There is are 15+ steps at this entrance. The steps are located to the left of the entrance and there are also steps next to the ramp. There is tactile paving at the top and bottom of the steps. The steps are clearly marked and are medium height (11cm - 17cm). The steps have handrails on both sides.

Reception - Main Entrance

The main reception is located to the left on entering the building. The desk is 9m (9yd 2ft) from the main entrance. The reception area is clearly visible from the entrance. There is step-free access to this reception area. The reception desk is medium height (77cm - 109cm).

Getting Around

Access

There is step-free access throughout the building via lifts. There is a slight slope, with handrails in place, for access to the rear of the building on the ground floor.

As you enter the building on the ground floor there are corridors to the left and right that have a slight slope. There are 10+ unmarked steps, with handrails on both sides, for access to the standard toilets in the basement. The steps are medium height (11cm - 17cm).

There is a platform lift which overcomes the steps. There are doors in corridors which have to be opened manually.

Other Floors

Steps

The floors which are accessible by stairs are G and 1. The stairs are located to the left and right of the foyer upon entering the building. The stairs are approximately 3m from the main entrance. There are 15 + steps between floors. The steps are medium height (11cm - 17cm). The steps have handrails on both sides and there is a landing.

Upper-Level Lift

There is a platform lift for public use which is located just inside the main entrance on the right next to the stairs. The floors which are accessible by this lift are G and 1. The weight limit for the lift is 225 kg. The lift is approximately 7m (7yd 1ft) from the main entrance.

Staff need to be notified for use of the lift. The dimensions of the lift are 85cm x 70cm (2ft 9in x 2ft 4in). The controls for the lift are within 90cm - 120cm from the floor. There is an identical lift on the left side of the stairs.

Basement Access Lift

There is a platform lift is located next to the stairs leading to the basement. The floors which are accessible by this lift are G and B. The weight limit for the lift is 225 kg. The lift is approximately 5m (5yd 1ft) from the main entrance.

Staff need to be notified for use of the lift. The dimensions of the lift are 89cm x 74cm (2ft 11in x 2ft 5in). The controls for the lift are within 90cm - 120cm from the floor. This lift is used to access the standard toilets.

Accessible Toilet

Location and Access

This accessible toilet is located to the right on entering the building, approximately 7m (7yd 1ft) from the main entrance. There is step-free access to the accessible toilet. There is tactile and pictorial signage on or near the toilet door.

The door opens by sliding (Bi-Fold). The door is heavy and is locked by a twist lock. The width of the accessible toilet opening is 89cm (2ft 11in). The door does not have a horizontal grab rail.

Toilet Features

The dimensions of the accessible toilet are 150cm x 146cm (4ft 11in x 4ft 9in). The height of the light switch/pull cord is 65cm from floor level. There is a lateral transfer space of 80cm (2ft 7in).

As you face the toilet pan the transfer space is on the right. There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side. There is a horizontal wall-mounted grab rail on the opposite side of the seat to the transfer space.

As you face the toilet the wall-mounted grab rail is on the left. There is a red flashing fire alarm beacon within the toilet. There is a female sanitary disposal unit.

Additional Fixtures

There is a toilet roll holder at a height of 54cm (1ft 9in) which can be reached from seated on the toilet.

The wash basin and tap can be reached from seated on the toilet. The height of the wash basin is 73cm (2ft 5in). There is a vertical wall-mounted grab rail on the right-hand side of the wash basin. The wash basin tap type is a lever mixer.

There is a wall-fixed soap dispenser which can be reached from seated on the toilet.

The height of the soap dispenser is 112cm.

There is a hand dryer at a height of 106cm (3ft 6in).

Standard Toilets

Toilet Facilities

The female and male toilets are located in the basement with step-free access via lift. The standard toilets are approximately 6m from the lift. There is pictorial signage on or near the toilet door. An ambulant toilet cubicle is not available.
