Parents and a child in green surroundings

Families with Children

Living with your children in campus accommodation

We have a limited number of self contained flats on campus which will accommodate a family with children.

Most of these flats are located on the roof tops of buildings across the main campus, with a small number having lift access to the front door.

There is a health centre, dentist and pharmacy on the university campus, as well as dedicated study and social spaces.

Safety of children on campus

Children must not be left alone in the accommodation at any time, and must be accompanied at all times when on the university campus. More details of the law that covers leaving a child can be found on the UK Government website.

If you are the occupant of a family flat, you agree not to permit any child to have access to:

  • any open roof areas surrounding the Accommodation; or
  • the landings and stairwells leading to the Accommodation unless supervised by a responsible adult.

See section 12.7 of our Terms and Conditions.

Education and child care

Lancaster University's Pre-school Centre is situated in a purpose-built building on the University campus. It offers unrivalled childcare facilities for students and staff of the University and caters for children between the ages of three months to five years.

If you are bringing your family to Lancaster, you may need to look for places in schools for your children. To find out more information about local schools, OFSTED reports, holiday dates and admissions, please use the A-Z to find ‘Schools’ on the Lancaster City Council website or call them on 01524 582000.

Support for pregnant students and expectant parents

If you are currently pregnant or expecting a child, the university can support you to manage your pregnancy and your academic programme, please visit support for pregnant students.

Please tell us if you will be pregnant on your arrival with us at the university.

Car parking

If you have a child aged 16 or under you are eligible for a student parking permit.

Students that live on the main campus with children aged five years or under are eligible for a staff parking permit, and may also to upgrade this permit to be able to park in the Visitor Parking Zone as well.

Please contact the Parking Office to arrange this.

Washing machines

Washing machines are only permitted in certain flats with the permission of the Graduate College Accommodation Office. You will be responsible for the purchase and maintenance of the machine and are responsible for disposal of the machine at the end of the accommodation contract period.

Note that not all flats have the plumbing required to install a washing machine.

The University does not supply washing machines but there are laundrettes around campus for all to use.
