There are many opportunities to get involved with College life as a member of staff allocated to The County College (aka a County 'Senior Member')

County is the largest and northern-most of the nine colleges, sitting at the top end of the University campus and flanked by woodland and open spaces. The original County Main building opened in 1969 but was recently refurbished as the college was modernised.

County's bar (The Northern Oak) sits alongside the common room and the popular eatery The County Diner. County Main opens out onto Lancaster Square and County Field, where the new eco-residences are located, and to the south lie more new residences and the John Creed Building.

The County logo depicts a leaf from the oak tree in the courtyard of the County Main building, a striking edifice that won a design award at the time for the County architect, Roger Booth. The original building was paid for and designed by Lancashire County Council (and after whom the County College is named).

Students

For students, colleges offer a welcoming community where lifelong friendships are formed. They start with their college on day one, normally living in on-campus accommodation in their first year, and graduate with their college. Furthermore, in addition to accessing a range of activities and opportunities, their college is the first place to go for any support if they have any difficulties.

What can The County College offer you?

There are also many opportunities to get involved with College life as a senior member. To find out more and get involved, please do not hesitate to join the Senior Common Room (SCR) Teams group. We’ll also send you an email newsletter at the start of each term with information, news, activities, and events.

College Syndicate

All senior members automatically become members of the College Syndicate. The annual College Syndicate Meeting is a chance to find out what’s been happening in County over the past year, and a way to contribute to College life, welcoming your ideas and suggestions for future activities and initiatives. Meetings usually take place in February each year with lunch is provided.

Social Events

Social activities at County attract a diverse and friendly membership. We run a number of social activities throughout the year, offering colleagues from across the University to mix in a relaxed ‘outside work’ atmosphere. In addition to the Teams group and the newsletter, you can find details about upcoming College events on the College events calendar, or take a look at our news page to see what we’ve been up to previously.

We currently run a few regular events in County.

The termly Welcome Event is a great opportunity for new and existing staff members to come together to find out more about the opportunities to get involved, as well as free food and a chat!

We also hold a monthly Book Club, held on the last Thursday of every month. If you’re interested, just join the SCR Teams group (see below) to access the Book Club channel for book nominations, discussion and upcoming meetings.

In addition, you can join the County Quiz Team, who meet regularly and take part in intercollegiate quiz competitions in the Summer, with the ‘Big Fat Nine College Staff Quiz of the Year’ taking place on Wednesday 15th of June, 12:30-13:00 in the Marketplace.

If you’re a fan of snooker, here at County we’re the only college with its very own full-size Snooker table. To access the snooker room, located in County Main, you can purchase a £5.00 annual membership from the Online Store.

Work Opportunities

Opportunities to work within the College arise on occasion, in areas such as student support as a College Advisory Team (CAT) member, discipline as a Dean, or the running of specific projects. It’s a great way to boost your skills and get involved in areas beyond your everyday role.
