What's Our Research Expertise?

  • At Lancaster, we have some of the world’s foremost experts in statistical ecology and epidemic modelling. Our experts combine mathematics, statistics, computing and real-world data to influence national and international policy and improve outcomes.
  • Much of the research we conduct has a strong applied focus with many active collaborations with external organisations.
  • These include the UK Health Security Agency, the Office of National Statistics, Butterfly Conservation, the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, the Zoological Society of London and Unilever.
  • This research has helped government officials and public health agencies to set better control policies for infectious diseases, and wildlife conservation organisations to design better conservation programmes. 

What Are We Teaching?

Third-year undergraduate, MSci and MSc students can gain a foundation in dynamic mathematical and probabilistic models used in biology, ecology and epidemics in our new-for-2024/25 module MATH338 Dynamic Modelling. You will:

  • Learn about different types of models used to describe the dynamics of systems such as epidemics, biological reactions in a cell and the interactions between predators and prey in an environment.
  • Tackle models related to numerous real-world problems and use mathematics and computer simulation to explore the behaviour of the models.

The module builds on compulsory modules on probability (MATH230) and programming (MATH245) as well as differential equations (MATH100). It also links well with the third-year module on stochastic processes (MATH332).

The experience gained during this module will be highly valuable, preparing you for a Master's course and, perhaps, a career in Mathematical Biology, Statistical Ecology or Epidemiology.
