August 2018 sees the launch of a new 'Global Arctic' MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) by École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.

As part of the MOOC, Pentland Centre member, Dr. Dmitry Yumashev, presents a lecture on “The opening of the Arctic to commercial shipping”. It introduces the audience to the past, present and future of Arctic shipping under climate change projections, describes different Arctic sea routes and their importance for the world, lists the main factors determining the opening up of the Arctic waters to commercial shipping, and discusses the impacts of growing shipping on the Arctic and globally. The focus is on the likely winners and losers from the changing trade patterns and climatic feedback associated with the increasing traffic through the Northern Sea Route. The Global Arctic MOOC describes the dynamics between global changes and changes in the Arctic. This course aims to highlight the effects of climate change in the Polar regions, underlining the impacts of a warmer Arctic on the planet Earth. The Arctic is both as a laboratory and a warning for mankind in the face of unprecedented climate change in the 21st century.
