By relying on conceptualizations of media memory and "othering" through news coverage that enhances socio-conservative positions on issues such as immigration, the book positions this moment in a time of contestation. Contributors ranging from scholars, professionals, and media critics operate in unison to analyze today’s interconnected challenges to traditional practices within media spheres posed by Trump news. The outcomes should resonate with citizens who rely on journalism for civic engagement and who are active in social change
What was your favourite part of working on this project?
I found I really enjoy editing, working with scholars across disciplines to create a cohesive collection on contentious moments in time for people, politicians, and the press.
What do you hope readers take away from this book/edited book/special issue?
I hope readers can come to see that journalism is more than just ‘reporting the news.’ It is about creating news from events that journalists deem important. These chapters, from all of the cases of personal, professional, and scholarly reflection and analysis, not only further theory about the press and the presidency but say just as much about how journalism works to indoctrinate and control through ideology than it tells stories about what happened today.
What follow-up work are you developing?
I am currently working on a book on the demonization of the press by Trump that, in turn, has led to moments by which the press has used coverage to legitimize itself. That should be out in 2019.
