Alastair Nokes is the current Law Society President. In his first blog post in this role he shares the Law Society's plans for the forthcoming academic year.

Hi, I am Alastair and I have been elected as your Law Society President for the upcoming year. The Law Society offers a fantastic opportunity for Law Students, or those interested in a career in Law, to acquire both the information and skills needed to take the next steps towards their future career. As the largest society on campus, we offer a diverse range of events and competitions throughout the year. A full description of events we are running this year is available both on our website and our LUSU page.

Law Society 2017/18 Highlights

1) Careers - The Law Society runs a number of careers talks across the year, aiming for roughly one a week. These cover a range of topics, from application advice to interview technique, aiming to give you all the information you will need for the next step in your career. We are also hosting our annual Careers Dinner and London trip with details being announced very soon. This year we have also added a number of “Alternative Careers for Law” talks for anyone who decides they would like to pursue a career outside of Law.

2) Competitions - We will be continuing with our successful internal Mooting competitions and ensure as many members as possible can compete in these events. The completion of the new Mock Courtroom will enable us to add an even more authentic feel to our competitions, including the use of digitised materials. We are also expanding the number of external competitions that we compete in and are aiming to continue to grow Lancaster’s Mooting reputation, both nationally and internationally, in competitions such as the VIS moot and BPP Advocate of the Year.

3) Academic Support – We will be continuing with a series of workshops that we began last year. These ‘academic workshops’ are student run sessions designed to complement the support offered by the academic staff within the Law School. Aimed primarily at first year students, the workshops cover areas including seminar, coursework, and exam preparation.

4) Socials - Last year we ran a record number of socials and we have increased the social calendar again for this year. The highlight of the social calendar is always the annual Law Ball which is held towards the end of Lent Term. This is a sell-out event and a great night for everyone involved.

How can I get involved?

You can join the Law Society at any time here. Once you have joined you will be able to get involved with all the activities we have to offer. You will also receive a weekly newsletter. In the coming weeks we have a number of exciting opportunities for our members, so keep an eye out for those.
