The Law School has provided me with endless opportunities to further my legal knowledge, including mooting and negotiation competitions, guest speakers from excellent law firms and a variety of optional second and third year modules to suit all career paths. For me, the best aspect of doing my law degree at Lancaster University was the Innocence project. I joined the project in my first year and continued with it until the end of my degree. The Innocence project takes on cases from individuals serving sentences for crimes that they maintain they are innocent of. They have exhausted the appeals process and often no longer have any legal representation. The project seeks to review these cases in hope of finding a fresh route of appeal. It has been an amazing experience for me and has massively complimented my degree. I have gained skills that not many law students have at University, such as experiencing professional correspondence with a client, having frequent contact with solicitors and barristers and learning how to organise and comprehend legal documentation. The project also helps to give you that ‘extra something’ that you need to stand out when applying for Training Contracts and Vacation Schemes.
I have also appreciated the wide variety of modules that the Law School offers. In my second and third year, I was able to study a variety of subjects such as Employment, Company and Intellectual Property law. I feel that this has given me the opportunity to tailor my degree to fit my chosen career path. Moreover, I have always found that the lecturers have been passionate about the module that they are teaching, with many being well-known in academia or having previously practiced as a solicitor or barrister. I have truly valued their expertise, willingness to discuss queries with students and provide guidance and advice for applications and career decisions. This is also complimented by the University Careers Service, which provides full support for students, such as helping to polish CVs and holding mock interviews and assessment days in preparation for graduate opportunities.
As my time at the Law School sadly draws to an end, I am so glad that I chose to study Law here at Lancaster. I have had such a positive and memorable experience, and have made friends for life. Can I do it over again?
